Do Bugs and Pests Come Inside During the Winter?

When the temperature begins to drop as winter sets in, you may feel like there’s an influx in the amount of insects and rodents that you’re seeing inside your house. And in reality, you may be right. Different pests deal with the frigid temps of winter in different ways, but there are many who may find your warm house to be the perfect spot to wait out the cold.

Some insects die off in the colder months, leaving behind eggs that will revive the population in the spring. Other insects migrate to warmer climates. But those that seem to be the biggest nuisance are those who decide to search out the warmest spot they can find, often settling on the inside of your home.

There are a number of bugs that like to seek out shelter inside warm homes in the colder winter months. These may include beetles, flies, ladybugs, or grass bugs. You may first spot one or two of these insects, but that number may multiply seemingly overnight. In some cases, you may have hundreds of these bugs invading your home. If it becomes such an issue that you simply can’t handle it, you will need to enlist the help of a local pest control company to help exterminate the pests.

Insects aren’t the only creatures out there looking for shelter. Rats, mice and other rodents also tend to head indoors when temperatures drop. Before the onset of weather hits in your area, it’s important to do a thorough check of your home to make sure it’s as tightly sealed up as possible.

Check the structure of your home for any cracks or gaps in the foundation or walls that may allow a mouse or rat to slide inside. Unfortunately, mice can slip in through a gap the size of a pencil eraser, and rats only need a space the size of a quarter. If you see even the smallest space, be sure to seal it up quickly with caulking, or to add weather stripping around doors and windows. If you haven’t already done so, consider installing screens on windows and doors. This is a great line of defense when it comes to keeping pests out.

Rats, mice, and other rodents can do quite a bit of damage to your home, so if you happen to see a critter or two running across your floor, or suspect that you hear them in your walls or attic, contact your pest control technician at once. Not only can they gnaw through your belongings, but they are also known to spread germs and bacteria. Keeping them out is important for the health of your family.

A local pest control company will be familiar with the types of pests that typically come indoors in the winter months in your area, and therefore will be able to help you take preventative measures. While it makes sense that these creatures need a warm place to wait out the cold, you probably don’t want that warm place to be your home. By speaking with your pest control tech and putting prevention techniques in place, you should be able to keep these critters out.
