Does Seeing One Roach Mean I Have a Cockroach Problem?

With the exception of ants, who will march proudly to and from any food source, pests generally try to stay in the shadows and hidden parts of your home. It almost makes you think that they know they’re not supposed to be inside your house, but they’re trying to get away with it anyway. Cockroaches follow this same pattern. They stay out of sight and you’re unlikely to see them wandering around your home, especially during the day (cockroaches are nocturnal). The most likely scenario is you’ll walk into your bathroom in the middle of the night, catching a glimpse of a roach scurrying away seconds after you turn on the light.

Unfortunately, the solitary roach isn’t traveling alone. There are many more nearby, and chances are they have set up shop somewhere on your property. How can you tell if you’re dealing with a full blown roach infestation? Here are some other signs to be on the lookout for:

Dead Roach Carcasses

Roaches are hard to kill, but sometimes they end up dead on their own. If you have a roach problem, you’ll typically find at least a couple of dead cockroaches around the house.

Egg Shells

Also referred to as shell casings, these are the remnants of recently hatched cockroach eggs. They are brown and oval shaped.

Cockroach Feces

Roach droppings look like ground coffee or black pepper, and the amount of feces you find is indicative of the severity of the infestation. If you find areas that look like a can of Folgers was dropped on the ground, you’ve got serious roach issues.

Smell

Yes, cockroaches have a distinct oily smell, which becomes stronger and more noticeable as the infestation grows. The smell can actually linger and permeate unprotected food – yum!

Roach Sightings During the Day

As mentioned above, cockroaches aren’t typically active during the day. If you see them walking around during daytime hours, it’s probably as a result of overcrowding – meaning you’ve got a whole lot of cockroaches hiding out in your house.
