The Myth About Spiders Crawling on You When You Sleep

You’ve probably heard the much-feared rumor that people swallow up to eight spiders a year in their sleep. This may have given you the impression that spiders are running rampant all over you and across your bed as you sleep. Luckily, this is one rumor that simply isn’t true. In fact, spiders are likely afraid of sleeping people, so there’s very little chance that they’ll be roaming all over your sleeping body.

The vibrations that your body puts off while you’re sleeping serve as a warning to spiders to stay away. The snoring, the beating heart, the shallow breathing – all of these things put off vibrations that cause spiders to run in the opposite direction. Spiders typically don’t have a desire to spend much time with humans, anyway. After all, we have nothing to offer them. They would much rather be spinning away in their webs or hunting for delicious bug snacks.

Another fact that should help you sleep a bit more soundly at night is that spiders would probably never end up in your mouth or anywhere near it for you to swallow them. If your mouth is open, you’re likely snoring, which would cause a spider to go running. And in the off chance that a spider did happen to summon the courage to crawl on a monstrous, vibrating beast of a human that is thousands of times their size, you yourself would most likely feel them crawling on your bare skin.

Even if a spider did by chance happen to crawl across you as you were sleeping and you somehow missed it, there’s very little chance that you would be affected in any way. Most spiders do not bite if they are not provoked, so it’s not as if they’re out to get you. Think about it. Whenever you’ve encountered a spider in the past, has it charged you to attack? Or has it run away in fear, or ignored you completely? Spiders simply don’t have a desire to interact with humans, and they certainly aren’t out for human blood.

When you’ve heard horror stories of people being bitten in the night by vicious spiders, the fact of the matter is that most often these bites were probably from a different bug altogether. Bed bugs, ants, and fleas are all much more likely to bite, and more likely to find their way into your sheets.

So if you wake up in the morning with a red, swollen bump that wasn’t there the night before, rest assured that the odds are in your favor that it was not a spider that bit you.
