Spiders. If you have a fear of spiders, as many people do, just the word alone may be enough to send chills down your back. The sight of a spider creeping its way along your floor or up your wall may send you over the edge. If this is how you feel, then there is nothing worse than the thought of a spider infestation. Unfortunately, spiders are a fact of life, and there are many times that they may find their way into your home.

The good news is that there are certain things that you may be doing to cause a spider infestation in your home, which means there are preventative measures you can take to keep them out. Keep reading to find out more so that you can do everything in your power to keep spiders outside where they belong.

Other insects provide the perfect food source for spiders, so if you’ve seen several creepy crawly bugs in your home lately, there’s a good chance spiders will soon come calling. The best guard against bugs of all kinds is making entry more difficult. Seal up any cracks, gaps, or crevices in the walls or foundation of your home. Make sure the areas around your windows and doors are sealed tight. Install screens on windows and doors if you don’t already have them. Making it more difficult for other bugs to come in will increase your odds for keeping spiders out as well.

Dark, cluttered spaces are another big draw for spiders. These areas allow them to camp out, spin their webs, and live their lives without being disturbed by pesky humans. If you have a room that is rarely used, or lots of clutter piling up, there’s a good chance spiders will soon make their home here. The best line of defense in this case is to keep your home tidy. Don’t allow items to pile up on the floor or in corners of rooms. Keep boxes off the floor and taped up so spiders won’t enter. By giving them fewer areas to make their homes, you will make your home less appealing.

Another common cause of spider infestations, as well as other bug infestations, is an unclean home. If you don’t sweep, dust, and vacuum on a regular basis, then you may be allowing spider webs and spider eggs to gather and spiders to make themselves cozy in an undisturbed space.  Try to make these tasks routine in order to keep spiders away.

Bringing outside items in the house is also another common method of entry for spider intruders. If you’ve recently brought firewood into your home, or perhaps moved plants inside from outdoors, you may have also brought spiders along for the ride. They may also come inside from their hiding spots in your garage if you are moving things inside from that area. In the future, keep an eye on the things you’re bringing indoors so that there are no surprises later on.

As you can see, there are several things you can do on your own to avoid a spider infestation. In addition to these preventative measures, consider having routine pest control maintenance done on your home. A local pest control company will be able to treat your home with a substance that will deter spiders from entering even if they have the perfect opportunity. For your peace of mind, it’s important to do all that you can to keep spiders out of your home.
