Bed bug treatment
Bed Bug Inspection & Treatment
Bed bugs hide in mattresses, furniture and wall gaps, and they travel easily from place to place. Zap inspects for and treats bed bugs in homes, apartments and lodging across the Sacramento region from our Rio Linda office.

How bed bugs get in
Bed bugs do not come from dirt or clutter. They hitch a ride in luggage, used furniture, backpacks, moving boxes and clothing, then settle in close to where people sleep or sit for long periods. A clean home can get bed bugs after one hotel stay or one secondhand couch. In apartments and condos they can also move between units through shared walls and plumbing gaps.
Signs of bed bugs
- Small, itchy bites in a line or cluster, often on arms, neck or legs, that show up overnight
- Tiny dark spots on mattress seams, sheets or the box spring
- Rust-colored stains on bedding
- Shed skins or pale eggs in seams, folds and the corners of furniture
- Live bugs: flat, oval and reddish brown, about the size of an apple seed
Bites alone are not proof, since other insects and skin conditions can look similar. An inspection confirms whether bed bugs are actually there.
How we handle bed bugs
Inspection. We check mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, couches, recliners, nightstands, baseboards, outlets and other places bed bugs hide. In multi-unit buildings, we may recommend checking neighboring units too.
Treatment plan. Based on what we find, we treat the rooms and furniture where bed bugs are living and hiding. We explain how to get the home ready, such as how to handle bedding, clothing and clutter, before the treatment date.
Follow-up. Bed bug eggs can hatch after the first visit, so follow-up visits are often part of the plan. We check the treated areas and treat again where we find activity.
Do not make it worse
- Do not move to another bedroom or the couch to sleep, since bed bugs will follow and spread
- Do not throw out furniture before talking to us; dragging it through the home can spread bugs
- Avoid store-bought foggers, which tend to scatter bed bugs into walls and other rooms
- Wash and dry bedding on high heat, and keep it bagged until it goes back on the bed

FAQ
Bed bug treatment questions
How do I know if I have bed bugs?
Look for small dark spots, shed skins and eggs along mattress seams, the box spring and furniture joints, plus live flat, reddish brown bugs. Bites alone are not proof, so an inspection is the surest way to confirm.
Do bed bugs mean my home is dirty?
No. Bed bugs travel in luggage, furniture and clothing, and they feed on people, not dirt or food scraps. Clean homes and nice hotels can both have them.
Why are follow-up visits needed?
Bed bug eggs can hatch after the first treatment. Follow-up visits let us check the treated areas and treat any new activity before it builds back up.
Should I throw away my mattress?
Not before talking to us. Many mattresses and furniture pieces can be treated, and moving infested items through the home can spread bed bugs to other rooms.
Do you treat bed bugs in apartments and motels?
Yes. We treat bed bugs for renters, property managers, apartment buildings and lodging, and we can coordinate access to units with your staff.
